Microsoft Compliance Chief Jumps to TikTok as Top U.S. Lawyer

“TikTok Inc., a social networking service owned by China’s ByteDance Ltd. that’s faced scrutiny from U.S. regulators and policymakers within the past year, has brought on a new legal chief for its Americas arm,” reports Brian Baxter in Bloomberg Law.

“Matthew Penarczyk, who spent nearly 19 years in-house at Microsoft Corp., recently left the company to become Americas head of legal for TikTok. Penarczyk’s new position makes him TikTok’s top lawyer in the U.S. and broader Americas region, which includes South America, said company spokesman Josh Gartner.”

San Jose Water Announces Willie Brown as Vice President, General Counsel

Charles Baker Named Interim Vice President and General Counsel

“Deputy general counsel Charles Barber has been named the University’s interim vice president and general counsel, officials announced Friday. Barber has worked in GW’s Office of the General Counsel for 25 years and has worked on a range of legal issues including real estate and business operations, according to a University release. The announcement comes after Senior Vice President and General Counsel Beth Nolan announced in March that she would retire this summer,” reports Abby Kennedy in The GW Hatchet.

“His deep knowledge and relationships across the University, his experience with a broad array of legal matters and his steady leadership navigating complex issues will allow GW to continue to best support our academic mission, University President Thomas LeBlanc said in the release. Barber has served the general counsel office since 1996 and has served as deputy general counsel since 2007, according to the release. Barber has also taught higher education law at GW Law since 2012.”

“The circumstances of Ellis’s selection, however, point to something different and in some respects worse than the developments at the Pentagon. The firings at the Defense Department involve political appointees, nearly all of whom will be gone as of Jan. 20. SEC Names Harvard Professor as General Counsel

“Harvard University law professor John Coates was named general counsel at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, following a four-month stint as acting director for the division of corporation finance,” reports Hugo Guzmanin Think Advisor.

“Taking Coates’ previous SEC position in that division will be Boston College Law School’s Renee Jones, the first Black woman to lead one of the SEC’s four major divisions. The move comes on the heels of new SEC Chairman Gary Gensler’s April Senate confirmation.”

Activision Blizzard Hires Boeing General Counsel as Legal Chief

“Activision Blizzard Inc. disclosed in a securities filing Thursday its hire of Boeing Co. general counsel Grant Dixton as its next chief legal officer Dixton, who also served as Boeing’s corporate secretary, was promoted by the aviation giant to its general counsel role last year. At Activision he will succeed longtime legal chief Christopher Walther, who the Santa Monica, Calif.-based company said has chosen to retire as of June 14<,” Report Brian Baxter in Bloomberg Law.
