Hanzo Adds Brad Harris as Vice President of Product

Hanzo announced the appointment of Brad Harris as vice president of product.

In a release, the firm said Harris is responsible for expanding the company’s product vision and for developing innovative solutions that address growing data management challenges for corporate legal and compliance departments. These include the preservation, retention, governance, and risk management of modern enterprise collaboration data including Slack.

Harris has more than 30 years of experience in high technology and IT, including the last 15 years in the field of ediscovery. At Zapproved, Harris was responsible for driving the company’s growth in the corporate legal segment, advising clients on best practices for data preservation and ediscovery, and managing the company’s product development strategy.

Harris has served as chair for such events as the PREX Conference and Cascadia Sessions. Harris is a frequent author and speaker on ediscovery, an active member of several The Sedona Conference working groups, and teaches as an adjunct professor at Lewis & Clark Law School.

Harris is based in Hanzo’s Portland, OR office.

 

 




Hannah Vanderlaan Joins Freeborn’s Chicago Office as Litigation Associate

Hannah D. Vanderlaan has joined Freeborn & Peters LLP’s Chicago office as an associate in the Litigation and Environment and Energy Law practice groups.

In a release, the firm said Vanderlaan focuses her practice primarily on environmental-based litigation and regulatory counseling.

Most recently, Vanderlaan worked as a law clerk at Freeborn. Prior to that, she served as a legal extern at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and with the Environmental Division of the Office of Illinois Attorney General, where she worked on a variety of federal and state environmental enforcement actions.

Vanderlaan received her J.D. (cum laude) from Chicago-Kent College of Law, where she served as editor-in-chief of the Chicago-Kent Environmental and Energy Law Journal and was actively involved in the Chicago Environmental Law Clinic. She also holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin.

 

 




Greensfelder Adds Three Attorneys in St. Louis

Greensfelder, Hemker & Gale, P.C. announced that Randall F. Scherck, Jessica L. Curtis and Jared S. Manse have joined the firm’s St. Louis office as attorneys in the Business Services, Employee Benefits and Intellectual Property practice groups, respectively.

In a release, the firm said Scherck serves as of counsel, with more than 35 years of experience representing businesses, banks and financial institutions in corporate matters, as well as experience litigating and negotiating actions in bankruptcy and state court. He represents primarily creditors in bankruptcy proceedings, including Chapter 7, 11, 12 and 13. He has represented secured creditors in obtaining lift stay, reclamation actions, and objecting to and litigating disputes involving plans of reorganization, the firm said.

Scherck’s practice also involves assisting leading financial institutions in connection with loan enforcement actions including foreclosures of commercial and residential real property in Missouri and Southern Illinois. He has served as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association, Commercial Section, and as an arbitrator in commercial disputes involving individuals, businesses and financial institutions. In addition, he represents clients in corporate and real estate matters, including litigation relating to these areas.

Prior to joining Greensfelder, Scherck was of counsel at Frankel, Rubin, Klein, Siegel, Payne, & Pudlowski, P.C.

Scherck received his J.D. from Washington University School of Law and his Bachelor of Arts from Trinity College.

Curtis is an associate who assists in designing, implementing and advising on benefits plans for employers of all sizes. She works with businesses and tax-exempt organizations on a variety of plans including qualified and non-qualified deferred compensation plans, health and welfare benefit plans, and executive compensation programs. Her experience includes transactional, litigation, compliance and risk-management projects.

Prior to joining Greensfelder, Curtis served as the Michael R. Cannon Fellow in Higher Education and Health Law at the Washington University in St. Louis Office of the Vice Chancellor and General Counsel. As a fellow, she collaborated on issues related to employee benefits and executive compensation, taxation, education law, health law and other areas. During law school, she interned for Judge James M. Dowd of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District.

Curtis received her J.D. (magna cum laude) from Saint Louis University School of Law. She also holds a Master of Arts and is completing work for a Ph.D., both in political science from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She also has a Bachelor of Arts (magna cum laude) from Webster University.

Also an associate, Manse focuses his practice on patent prosecution, IP litigation, and strategic planning regarding patent infringement and validity. With a background in the life sciences, including a Ph.D. in molecular microbiology, he assists clients in the biochemical, pharmaceutical and material sciences areas with patent prosecution and licensing, as well as patent and trademark freedom-to-operate analyses and enforcement. He is experienced in inter partes reviews, post-grant reviews and appeals, and anticipatory IP litigation planning and strategy.

The firm said Manse’s technical experience includes molecular cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, nucleic acid purification, cell culture, heterologous protein expression and purification, immunocytochemistry, and confocal microscopy.

Prior to joining Greensfelder, Manse was an associate at Thompson Coburn LLP.

Arent Fox Adds Senior Government Relations Director Oliver Spurgeon III

Arent Fox LLP announced the expansion of its Government Relations group with the addition of Senior Government Relations Director Oliver Spurgeon III.

Spurgeon joins the firm’s Washington, DC office.

Prior to joining Arent Fox, Spurgeon was the deputy director of federal affairs at the National Association of Community Health Centers. At NACHC, Spurgeon advised the c-suite, board of directors, and 11,000 health centers on strategy, policy analysis, and advocacy issues to help secure $7.9 billion in federal funding that reached 28 million people, the firm said in a release.

Before joining NACHC, Spurgeon was the manager of government affairs at the National Recreation and Park Association. In that role, he also supported the c-suite and board of directors in executing an $18 million budget to serve 50,000 members, evaluated federal and state health care regulations and legislation, and led NRPA in finding solutions to reduce hunger and improve health, the firm said.

Prior to his association lobbying experiences, Spurgeon served for five years on the Washington, DC staff of Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA), where he covered health policy, tax, education, and other issues. He spent two years in the congressman’s Atlanta-area office, where he was the liaison to municipal governments, colleges and universities, the business community, and other stakeholders.

Spurgeon serves on the board of directors and human resources committee for the United Planning Organization, the board of directors and as acting treasurer for the DC Strings Workshop, the board of directors and as acting secretary for the Historic Anacostia Block Association, and executive committee member and acting legislative committee chairman for the Ward 8 Democratic Party. Littler Expands into Asia with Singapore Office

Littler announced it is planning to open an office in Singapore, the firm’s first in Asia.

Upon final approval by local authorities, the Singapore office will be led by Littler shareholder Trent Sutton, who will be joined in the office by special counsel Nancy Zhang. Sutton, who speaks Korean and has lived in several countries throughout Asia, focuses his practice on counseling clients on multi-country employment and compliance matters. He regularly conducts cross-border internal investigations, advises on the employment aspects of global expansions and workforce restructurings, and conducts training sessions on human resource issues.

In a release, the firm said that Zhang, with extensive experience practicing in China, is qualified to practice in the People’s Republic of China. Prior to joining Littler, she practiced at an international law firm in Beijing and served as an in-house counsel at a multinational company headquartered in China.

Sutton and Zhang will reside in the Singapore office and will continue to work closely with other attorneys in Littler’s International Employment Law practice and with those licensed in the Asia Pacific region, including shareholder Naomi Seddon, who is admitted to practice in Australia and New Zealand, and special counsel Aki Tanaka, who formerly practiced and is licensed in Japan.

 

 




Mishka A. Woodley Joins Farrell Fritz’s Albany Office

Mishka Woodley has joined Farrell Fritz as a healthcare and government relations associate in the firm’s Albany office.

In a release, the firm said Woodley facilitates negotiations with government agencies and legislative leaders regarding complex issues, such as the corporate practice of medicine, health insurance reimbursements, cannabis legislation, telehealth, for-profit referrals and health care service and provider challenges. She has a health and human services background, working in various roles at healthcare industry associations and organizations and has held internship roles at the United States Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of New York and in the Health Bureau of the New York State Attorney General’s Office.

Barnes & Thornburg Adds Labor and Employment Partner in Minneapolis

Barnes & Thornburg has added Alec J. Beck as a partner in the Labor and Employment Department in the Minneapolis office.

Neal Gerber Eisenberg Adds Intellectual Property Partner Timothy M. Nitsch

Neal Gerber Eisenberg announced the addition of Timothy M. Nitsch as a partner in the Intellectual Property practice group. Nitsch was recently a partner at Freeborn & Peters LLP, where he served as co-chair of the intellectual property litigation practice group.

In a release, the firm said Nitsch advises clients and prosecutes patent applications for products such as internet-based software, cellular and telecommunications devices, electronic medical devices, automation hardware and software, cellular charging devices, and database analytic software. Nitsch’s experience also extends to filing and prosecuting patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty, procedural actions before the Patent Trial and Appeals Board and appellate proceedings at the Federal Circuit.

After beginning his career as an engineer working on building automation and the access control industry, Nitsch spent more than 15 years working in technical fields, including computer software and networking, telecommunications, electrical circuits, and mechanical systems. He is a named inventor on six utility patents for electrical systems and mechanical devices.

Michele Jacobson, Jennifer Recine Take On Litigation Leadership Roles at Stroock

Stroock has tapped partners Michele Jacobson and Jennifer S. Recine to lead its New York General Litigation and firmwide Real Estate Litigation practices, respectively, the firm announced in a release.

Recine is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee and a co-chair of its Insurance and Reinsurance Group.

Hogan Lovells Adds Real Estate Finance Lawyer Ana Tenzer in Denver

Ana Lazo Tenzer has joined Hogan Lovells as a partner in the Corporate practice in Denver. Tenzer, who focuses on real estate finance, will be a member of the firm’s national real estate team.

Tenzer previously was with Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, where she served as chair of the firm’s Finance & Lending Group, and before that as co-chair of the firm’s Real Estate Department. She began her legal career at Paul Hastings in New York.

Foley Adds Former FDA Counsel Paul Joseph in Washington, D.C.

Foley & Lardner LLP announced that Paul Joseph has joined the firm’s Government Solutions Practice Group as of counsel in the Washington, D.C. office. Joseph joins from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where he served as associate chief counsel for enforcement in the Office of the Chief Counsel.

During his time at the FDA, Joseph worked with the Office of Criminal Investigations, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and other government agencies to investigate and prosecute violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. He also was involved in numerous healthcare fraud matters and False Claims Act investigations involving FDA regulated drugs, medical devices, food, dietary supplements, and biologics.

Prior to joining the FDA, Joseph was a trial attorney for the DOJ for almost 20 years. He worked on civil and criminal investigations, international legal compliance issues, and held positions within several sections of the DOJ’s Criminal Division, including the Asset Forfeiture Money Laundering Section, the Office of International Affairs and the Office of Enforcement Operations, in addition to the District of Columbia U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Joseph received his B.A. from Boston College, and his J.D. from Boston College Law School, where he was awarded the Campbell Scholarship for Public Service. He is also a recipient of the Attorney General’s John Marshall Award for Outstanding Legal Achievement in Litigation and an FDA Honors Award for demonstrated collaboration in connection with the successful seizure and destruction of thousands of misbranded drug products sent to consumers in the U.S.

 

 




Dykema’s Austin Office Adds Mike Toth and Ashley Shapiro Bunyard

Dykema has added attorneys Mike Toth and Ashley Shapiro Bunyard to its Austin office, both in the firm’s Litigation Department.

Toth is a former justice on the Texas Third District Court of Appeals at Austin. Before taking the bench, Toth served as a special counsel to the Texas Office of Attorney General, where he developed and implemented litigation strategy in a broad range of high-profile cases involving significant executive-level deliberation on complex legal issues. Toth has litigated in state and federal courts across Texas and achieved numerous nationwide victories in cases involving federal regulations, the firm said.

Toth earned his J.D., as well as an M.A. in history, from the University of Virginia, and a B.A., magna cum laude, in history from Stanford University. After graduating from law school, he served as a trial attorney in the United States Marine Corps, and Toth remains a major in the Marine Corps Reserves assigned to the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate to the Commandant of the Marine Corps in the Pentagon. Toth is a former law clerk to Judge Edith H. Jones on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

Stephanie C. Gaston has joined Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP’s Houston office as a partner in the Labor and Employment Practice Group.

Crawford, Wishnew & Lang Adds Christopher Hamilton in Dallas

Christopher E. Hamilton has joined Crawford, Wishnew & Lang PLLC in its office in Dallas.

In a release, the firm said Christopher, a native Texan who was a U.S. Navy SEAL before pursuing a career in law, has experience in representing individuals and entities in matters involving construction defects, products liability, personal injury and wrongful death, among other things. His practice at CWL also will include other areas of litigation, including business, employment and intellectual property disputes.

Hamilton graduated from Texas A&M School of Law in 2018, where he was decorated and active within the school’s Oral Advocacy Program, placed second in the National Sports Law Negotiation Competition, and was named chair of the Alternative Dispute Resolution section. He received the Order of the Barristers prior to his graduation.

Joel Forman has joined Akerman LLP’s national Litigation Practice Group as a partner in New York.

Stacey L. McGraw has joined Dykema in its Insurance Industry Group and Business Litigation Practice as a member in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office. McGraw joins Dykema from Troutman Sanders LLP.

The firm said McGraw’s practice focuses on providing counsel to and representing major professional liability insurance carriers with respect to coverage issues, ultimate exposure and underwriting strategy. She advises clients on matters involving complex insurance policies for directors and officers and other professionals, including those in quickly growing areas of technology, telecommunications and media.

Michael J. Altieri has joined Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP as senior attorney in the firm’s global environmental practice in the Boston office.

IADC Member Matthew Keenan Confirmed by Senate to Legal Services Corporation Board

The International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC) has announced that IADC member Matthew D. Keenan has been appointed by President Trump and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as one of eight new members of the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) board of directors.

Also a partner at Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P. in Kansas City, Mo., Keenan was sworn in as an LSC board member Oct. 2 by U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts following his Aug. 1 Senate confirmation. The LSC is the largest provider of civil legal assistance for low income people in the nation. Its 11-member board is bipartisan: No more than six members may be of the same political party.

Keenan is past chair of the Social Justice Pro Bono Committee and current member of the Trial Techniques and Tactics Committee, both of the IADC, which takes a leadership role in many areas of legal reform and promotes social justice by expanding and supporting pro bono programs among attorneys who are members of the IADC.

Keenan also serves on the board of Legal Aid of Western Missouri and previously served for eight years as chair of Shook, Hardy & Bacon’s Pro Bono Committee.

In a release, the firm said Keenan focuses his practice on pharmaceutical and medical device litigation. He also focuses on the preparation and defense of a number of corporate witnesses in many MDL proceedings. During his career, he has tried jury trials in seven states.

Dykema Adds Litigators Israel Silvas, Mike Toth and Alexis Farrell

Dykema announced the addition of attorneys Israel R. Silvas, Mike Toth and Alexis B. Farrell to its Dallas office, and to the firm’s Commercial Litigation Practice Group. Farrell joins Dykema as an associate after graduating with a J.D. from Notre Dame Law School. She worked as a summer associate at Dykema in 2018. Her practice will focus on commercial litigation, including products liability matters. In law school, Farrell was an ABA team member of the Moot Court Board, served as managing editor of the Journal of Legislation, and was president of the Native American Law Students Association while working as an Alumni Fellow for the law school.

Farrell earned her B.S. in Political Science, summa cum laude, from Oklahoma Christian University where she was the Outstanding Political Science Graduate of 2016 and worked as a Political Projects Intern for the Oklahoma State Chamber of Commerce and a law clerk for the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office.

An experienced dental professional, Maranto joins Dykema with nearly two decades of experience working in the dental industry, including time serving as chief operating officer of Electus Health and Dental Depot, as well as more than 18 years working with Henry Schein—a distributor of health care products and services with a presence in 34 countries. She earned a degree in biology from the University of Indianapolis.

 

 




SDV Hires Stacy Manobianca and Jeanne Crandall

Stacy Manobianca and Jeanne Crandall have joined Saxe Doernberger & Vita, P.C. as of counsel attorneys in the Northeast and Southeast offices, respectively.

In a release, the firm said Stacy is experienced in litigation, including depositions and motion practice as well as settlement negotiations, mediations and arbitrations, trials and appellate practice. In addition to representing builders and condominium associations in multi-faceted construction defect litigation, she has also represented manufacturers of automobiles and consumer products in complex product liability and personal injury suits involving catastrophic injuries, including traumatic brain and severe burn injuries, and wrongful death. Most recently, Manobianca worked for a major insurer as a senior complex analyst analyzing coverage, liability and damages in professional liability healthcare claims.

The firm said C randall has experience as lead trial and appellate counsel in highly complex commercial, insurance defense, securities and antitrust litigation in federal and state courts in multiple jurisdictions. She was the first female partner at a well known Dallas firm, and her career includes 20 years at a firm she founded. There, she successfully resolved hundreds of litigation matters as outside counsel for the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Most recently, she was national counsel for a major insurer in professional liability cases against real estate appraisers.
